Hundreds of middle school students gathered at Williams Stadium on Monday evening for the annual DMPS All-City Middle School Track & Field Meet. Great weather led to some great results, and a reminder of the district-wide effort to increase middle school sports and activities. Click the image to read and see more of the competition.

You can go to the planetarium… or have the planetarium come to you! Callanan Middle School was visited by the Planetarium Dome Theater. Organizers set up shop in the auditorium and 8th grade science students lined up for a lesson about the galaxy inside what looks like a large, gray, inflatable igloo. Callanan Middle School 7th grade students celebrated Earth Day by covering the walkways outside the school in chalk art. Students have been learning about how human actions affect the environment in both positive and negative ways. To see more pictures of the students and their art, click on the image.

DMPS will again offer breakfast and lunch over the summer months to children 18 and younger. The number of sites has grown, and so have the number of meals served. Last summer, DMPS staff fed children 28,722 breakfasts and 79,698 lunches. DMPS has sponsored a summer meal program for more than 30 years. In with a bang and out with a bang as some schools rallied at the start of the Iowa Assessments and some marked the conclusion. Today is the last day of the state-wide assessment given to students across Iowa. At Callanan Middle School, an assembly with prizes, games and more was held to celebrate the end.
